Gaining New Perspective
The Islamic Society of Delaware is the largest Muslim community following in Delaware and provides a religious platform for all community members to come together in one cause. In September, YWCA Delaware partnered with Dr. Ahmed Sharkawy and the Islamic Academy of Delaware to tour the mosque and academy. Participants were encouraged to learn about the beauty of the faith. It provided an excellent forum to learn about our Islamic neighbors, dispel common myths and misconceptions and openly discuss international tensions.
"We quickly saw how many attacks on the Islamic community echo the sentiments hurled at early Catholic immigrants. That helped us to look at current controversies through their eyes. There were tons of questions about Islam and international tensions. The open, frank yet warm response was itself a wonderful learning experience."
